All aboard that's going aboard!

LST-393 -- the World War II tank-landing ship of D-Day fame -- has started its official touring season.

Tours are available 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

The LST-393 Preservation Association is now booking overnight youth encampments on board the ship, which continues to undergo restoration at the Mart Dock on Muskegon Lake near the city's downtown.

A new entrance to the vessel has been created through the bow of the ship, following the opening last summer of its large bow doors into the cavernous tank deck.

According to association President Dan Weikel, the ship will host its annual Armed Forces Day Tribute on May 17, at which the Muskegon Lions Club will hold a pancake breakfast and a brat lunch.

The occasion will coincide with the opening of a relocated and larger gift shop aboard the vessel, as well as displays depicting all military services and their connection with Muskegon during the war.

Free "Movies on Deck" will return this year, starting in June.
